Located in the vibrant heart of New York City at 100 Kenmare Street, Zooba brings an authentic slice of Egyptian and Middle Eastern flavor to the bustling urban landscape. Specializing in Egyptian, Mediterranean, and Halal cuisine, this restaurant masterfully blends tradition with a modern twist, appealing to both meat lovers and vegans alike. From the moment you step inside, you’re enveloped in a unique dining atmosphere that feels like a lively tribute to Egyptian desert nightlife—highlighted by colorful LED lights that hint at an energetic nocturnal culture without evoking the typical club scene.
Zooba’s menu is a celebration of bold flavors and authentic ingredients. Highly recommended is the Hawawshi, a spiced Egyptian meat pie that strikes a perfect balance between crispy, savory, and hearty. Loyal patrons praise the falafel here as unrivaled—always crispy on the outside, tender and flavorful within, paired with warm, fluffy pita bread that’s clearly crafted with care. Their fries also deserve special mention, seasoned just right to complement their signature sauces, enhancing every bite with a delightful punch of flavor.
For those leaning toward plant-based options, Zooba’s offerings resonate exceptionally well. The restaurant embraces a predominantly vegetarian approach without sacrificing depth or zest. Dishes like the Badawi Beef bowl (for non-vegans) provide a satisfying, savory experience, while vegan and halal choices abound in variety and taste. The array of sauces—from delicate hibiscus tahini to more robust savory dips—encourages diners to explore and personalize their meals, creating a dynamic culinary journey.
While the food continuously receives high praise for its seasoning and originality, the dining experience itself has evolved. Zooba recently shifted from a fast-casual setup to a more refined sit-down service with servers, introducing a curated, slightly limited menu. This change was met with mixed feelings: some loyal customers appreciate the modernized atmosphere and attentive staff, while others miss the quick, casual vibe that once defined the restaurant.
Zooba’s ambiance is as thoughtfully crafted as its cuisine. The colorful, ceiling-mounted LED lights contribute an unexpected yet charming visual element, immersing guests in a playful yet cozy environment that reflects the cultural energy of Egyptian nights in the desert cities rather than a conventional nightlife scene. This clever design choice creates an inviting backdrop that makes every meal feel like a special occasion, whether you’re indulging early in the day or settling in for a relaxed lunch.
Despite the occasional note about pacing from the staff—some diners have felt a slight rush to vacate their tables—the overall service remains friendly and welcoming. The staff’s passion for their food and culture shines through, which enhances the dining experience and reassures that every dish is made with care and authenticity.
In summary, Zooba is a must-visit for those craving a taste of Egyptian and Middle Eastern cuisine with a contemporary edge. Whether you’re drawn by the legendary falafel, the transformative spices in the Hawawshi, or curious about vegan and halal Mediterranean fare, Zooba serves up a memorable feast of flavors in an atmosphere that is fascinatingly vibrant and uniquely inviting.
Really neat ambulance. We went at 11am and felt a bit ripped out of morning time due to the ceiling-mounted colorful led lights. I believe this is a reference to the night life culture (not clubbing and drinking, just living in the night) of the Egyptian desert cities. Very interesting ambiance I quite liked it! The food was great, particularly the Hawawshi. We also got fries, which had a lovely seasoning on them but were a bit too thick cut to achieve any kind of crunch, and the beef liver pita, which was really flavorful and juicy and delicious. But the textures of the Hawawshi stole the show! Oh and the iced tea was delicious but very sweet, almost to the point of Sweet Tea from the South (Georgia & Alabama). Very fun to have a legit Egyptian street food spot here in Manhattan!
*update: went there recently and I believe they found the right balance between easy and convenient, while making it more modern and upscale. Still the best falafel and pita bread in the world, highly recommended!! *previous review: Food is still amazing, but now they changed to sit down with servers, limited menu, more complicated :-( bring back the fast casual model please!
Delicious. Everything was great but the falafel and the fries absolutely stole the show. The seasoning and flavors that they use here pack quite a punch. My only complaint is the service - it felt like they were trying to get us out of our table the entire time.
We came here for lunch and had a great, satisfying meal. I really liked the Spicy Hawawshi with Hibiscus Tahina. If you want to try a bowl, I would recommend the Badawi Beef. The Dukla Fries were tasty and seasoned well but a little low on the quantity for the price. The different sauces are all delicious you should try a few of them. Service was great, very friendly. The restaurant was clean and everything is halal.
Overall rating: 4.4 I was very excited to try Egyptian when I found this place on Google. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I know I was hoping for unique food. I was a bit surprised when I went it was mostly a variation of halaal. I also didn’t realize the place was mostly vegetarian and think its description should be updated. I think I got the basic halal with beet and another sauce. The sauce was reallly good!! I would go back for the beet sauce. But the food ended up being a side to my beet sauce. The staff seemed very friendly but it was so bright. Wish they could lower it just a tad. If you’re a vegetarian, I think you’re going to like this place a tad more.
Love the new format and the food is great. As a vegetarian, I can still get my favorite spicy taameya sandwich and they’ve added some great Egyptian dishes - molokheya and Ocra. Perfect atmosphere for a fun dinner with friends or something more festive like a birthday or date. Service was top notch too.
So so yummy! i've been wanting to try to this place for a while and understand now why they have solid 4.5. Cool vibes, great food, reasonable prices. Can't wait to try their other dishes. I had the meatball plate and hibiscus tea (SO good). Heavy on cumin if that's not your thing but otherwise delicious and very filling.
